Me one month post-BC in October 2010 |
So how did I fall in love with TWA hair?
Well, I’ve had TWAs before. These were times when my hair was short, relaxed and spiked where I wanted a different texture. I’d be in the process of growing it out and one day I’d just up and cut it. I’d wear it natural for about two months then relax it again. I’ve made this TWA move five or six times.
In September 2010, after I had all that I could take of relaxers and bad cuts, I decided to go natural for good. So on September 25, I did the big chop. I loved it. It grew really fast. I wasn’t sure all the relaxer was out so in November I got another cut and the barber assured me it was all gone.
Initially, Fantasia IC gel and Cantu Shea butter leave in were my style staples. Then I found Kinky Curly which was great for managing the wavy hair at the very top of my head.
As the months went on and my hair grew, I got really frustrated with trying to style my hair. I wore wigs (which I love, but they make me really hot). I also tried various styles like coils and twists that would not work. I even straightened it once. I thought about getting a relaxer back, but I knew I would not be happy if I did. Finally, in April 2011, nine months after my big chop, I did another big chop. I am back to my TWA, and I’ve decided to stay that way.
Why this blog?
I love to rock my TWA because it is convenient, easy and freeing. It’s a real confidence booster for me. While at the natural hair show, I saw an acquaintance who said, "Girl I love your hair. I am so glad you cut it. I meant to tell you not to put another wig on your head. This really opens your hair up.”
I became even more determined to rock my TWA. It was this conversation and my experience at the World Natural Hair Show that I decided to start my own natural hair blog. I went home started researching a natural hair blog niche and could not find one blog dedicated to TWA hair. Blogs I love like Curly Nikki, Black Girl Long Hair, and others discuss TWAs, but I couldn’t find one that’s dedicated to TWAs, teeny weeny afros, short natural hair, or whatever you want to call it.
And so…. Rock Your TWA was born.
